The heavy artillery (strap wrench) has come out.

clearly you’ve never had to remove the oil filter off of a front-wheel drive GM 3800 V6.

So damn frustrating when it should be something so simple. I do like wrench off filters, like K&N. Of course you still have to be able to get to the damn thing

A souvenir from my time in Germany. Mine accepts a 3/8" ratchet. I bought a number of Hazet wrenches and tools whilst I was stationed in Germany in the late 80s.

That is why I like Subarus. The oil filter is so easy to change.

Its like they design an engine and never think that it has to go in a vehicle.

My oil filter is right on top of the engine and takes all of ten seconds to change.

I use a K&N on my bike and the wrench off feature is really convenient.

My E92 M3 is like this. Nice and easy to get to.

You just have to avoid dripping all over your engine bay when you remove it.

My Subarus are like this, but they finally got smart and put that oversized pan under it so you can screw it off then just wait a second for it to drain and flip it over without making a mess.

On that engine. The EJ255 have them on the bottom in between the exhaust manifold. PIA if they're on too tight as you can put a wrench on them.

Well that seems to be a goofy placement.
My all time least favorite oil filter was my grandfather’s 03 Toyota Avalon. The car sat a lot so the filter was on well over 12 months. This wouldn’t be such a big deal, but the filter on the 3L V6 Toyota used at that time was on the front cylinder bank right below the exhaust manifold, so it was hot and damn near impossible to get a good grip on.

If strap wrench won’t work and there is enough room, these have always worked for me.

I wish there was a way to know for sure if it’s dummies overtightening filters or not lubing the gasket or both.
